Expanding Sinkhole in Spring Hill, FL
A slowly expanding sinkhole in the Tampa area is threatening homes in one neighborhood in Spring Hill, Florida. At least one of the homes has been evacuated due to the 40 foot wide sinkhole and the rest of the neighborhood residents are concerned it will spread to their adjoining properties.
Sinkholes are common in Florida due to the fact that the ground consists of mostly limestone. This limestone dissolves over time from acid that is created from the oxygen in water, creating voids underneath the limestone roof. When the dirt, clay or sand gets too heavy for the limestone roof, it can collapse and form a sinkhole.
Sinkholes are formed naturally but they can be triggered by heavy rainfall, drought followed by heavy rainfall, tropical storms and human activity. Some of the most common activities by people that causes sinkholes are:
- Pumping of groundwater during freezes to pump on oranges and strawberries to keep them from being damaged
- Well drilling
- Creating landfills
- Leaking broken water lines
- Pounding or blasting from constructions
The sinkhole that is threatening the Spring Hill neighborhood is roughly 40 feet deep. It has drawn many curious passersby. Many of the residents dropped sinkhole insurance because it became too expensive.
