Sinkholes in Jacksonville, FL

Sinkhole repair in Jacksonville, FLSinkholes have been in the news lately in Jacksonville, FL. One of the more recent ones was formed due to a sewer line failure under the runway at Naval Air Station. Sinkholes can form due to a variety of reasons in the Jacksonville, FL area.

Florida has more sinkholes than any other state in the nation. One of the reasons is that the entire state is made up of limestone. This limestone stores and transmits groundwater. Through a slow chemical process, the limestone will dissolve, resulting in sinkhole formation.

Heavy rainfall, especially after a drought and tropical storms also contribute to the forming of sinkholes. Human activity can also trigger sinkholes. If there is heavy pumping of groundwater for agricultural, protection, investigative drilling, and excavation this can cause the formation of sinkholes.

There are three types of sinkholes:

  • Collapse – These sinkholes are the more dangerous type. They form suddenly into a cavity or cave. When you have a collapse sinkhole a large cavity will form underneath the surface and continue to get larger and larger until the surface can’t support the weight on top and it will collapse.
  • Solution – These sinkholes happen gradually. They appear in sandy sediments over top of limestone bedrock. Solution sinkholes start to form when it gradually un-fills cracks and voids underneath bedrock by the sandy sediments. When the groundwater flows it washes away the sediments in the bedrock causing a sinkhole.
  • Subsidence – Subsidence sinkholes are similar to solution sinkholes except that the soluble bedrock is covered by a layer of thick soil. When surface water gets into the cavities and dissolves the bedrock and the overlaying sediment gradually moves downward into the expanding cavity.

Compaction grouting will increase the density in the layers of your soil surrounding your property. The grout will mix with the soil and firm up the ground along your foundation. This will help prevent foundation damage in the future.

Compaction grouting is the method of injecting fast setting polyurethane foam into loose soil. This foam expands rapidly forming balls or columns of dense structural foam. This will compact the surrounding soils and increase the load bearing capacity.

Foundation Professionals of Florida also uses permeation grouting. This method is the injection of liquid resin into the ground so that the resin permeates the soil before reacting. Once reacted, the soil and resin form a strong, solid, impermeable mass in the ground to increase the load bearing capacity of the soil.
